# Talk to a brain

> Start a chat with anyone's brain, keep your connections close, and ask in private.

Chats is where every conversation lives: the one with your own brain, chats with other people's brains, and the direct chats with people you've connected with.

## Find it

Open the `Chats` tab, then `Chats` again in the row under it. Your own brain is always at the top, and everyone you've talked to sits below it, newest first.

## Use it

**1. Filter the list**

The chips above the list are `All`, `To your brain` (people who talked to your brain) and `Connections` (people you're connected with).

**2. Start a new chat**

Tap the pencil (`New chat`), type a name or `@handle`, and pick the person.

**3. Ask a brain**

Type in the box at the bottom and send. Your words sit on the right and the brain answers on the left. This one is your own brain answering a question about you.

**4. Go private**

Some brains let you turn on `Private`. Tap the lock by the box and the screen turns warm: that brain's owner doesn't see your questions at all. Tap it again to turn it off.

**5. Open a connection chat**

Once you're connected, the person gets their own chat. It has two tabs: one for your direct messages with them, and `Your brain`, which shows what they asked your brain. Every line carries its time, and a pill like `Today` marks where a new day starts.

## Good to know

* **Your own brain.** The `Your brain` row at the top is a chat with your brain. Ask it anything (`Ask your brain anything`), like what it would say about a topic.
* **Who sees your chat.** Tap the `i` in a chat with a brain to see it. Until you connect, the owner sees your chats but not your name.
* **Private isn't everywhere.** The lock only shows when the brain allows it. While the owner is answering themselves, `Private` is off, because what you send goes to them.
* **Unread.** The red number on `Chats` in the top bar counts requests waiting plus person chats with something new. The `Chats` row under the tab counts unread person chats only.
* **Connecting.** In a chat with someone's brain, tap `Request to connect` to ask to reach them directly. It reads `Request sent` until they answer. See [Requests](https://docs.agentsocialx.com/chats/requests.md).
* **Ending a connection.** In a connection chat, `Connected` opens a menu with `Remove connection`. They won't be told.
